Do you believe in magic—or mind reading? In this episode, Ben becomes a mentalist and amazes students with a math-based mind-reading trick. Curley chooses a secret number between 1 and 15, marks it on a chart, and Ben—without ever seeing it—reveals the number!
Ben then explains the clever math behind the trick, showing students how it works. With a little practice, they’ll be ready to perform this mind-reading math magic themselves and impress family and friends.

The main video for students helps them solve the math challenges in class.
Students should watch the segment first. Before the video reveals the explanation, the teacher pauses it and performs the mind-reading trick live in class. This surprise will amaze the students and build curiosity. Afterwards, the teacher can let the video continue so students learn the secret, then encourage them to try the trick themselves.
This segment is fun and engaging for all ages to watch.
Addition and Logic
Give your students the set of 4 number strips (click the image on the right to print). Have them practice the trick with a partner. With a little rehearsal, they’ll be ready to impress their family and friends by performing this amazing mind-reading math trick.
To find the secret number, ask the volunteer to tell you in which column (or columns) the number appears. Now add the top numbers in those columns together and that tells you the secret number!
All you have to do is memorize the top number in the 4 columns (A=1; B=2; C=4; D=8)

If for example the number was 7. The volunteer will announce that 7 appears in columns A, B and C. You then add up 1+2+4=7. It’s going to work with every other number as well!
